Make the most of your ēllu App

Learn why it's important that you give permissions to your ēllu App in this article. To make your experience with ēllu the best we recommend setting your permissions as follows:

In iOs, go to Settings > ELLU

  • LOCATION: Always ✅ You can learn more in this article.

    • Why? So that, if the app is running in the background, your contacts can continue to see your location in features such as Circles, Location, Aware, and SOS. Please note that if the app is completely closed on iOS, the operating system will not allow these features to update your location.

  • CONTACTS: Enabled ✅

    • Why? To help you communicate with your contacts, we will only show those who are already on ēllu, without accessing your entire contact list. We explain this permission in detail in this article.

  • PHOTOS: All photos (recommended)

    • Why? It will prevent us from asking you for access every time you send/receive a photo/video.

  • BLUETOOTH: Enabled ✅

    • Why? So if you have Band you can connect it. To enable it go to Settings > Bluetooth > On.

  • MICROPHONE: Enabled ✅

    • Why? So you can send SOS messages and audios.

  • CAMERA: Enabled (recommended)

    • Why? So you can send a photo / video without us asking you at that precise moment.

  • NOTIFICATIONS and CRITICAL ALERTS: Allow notifications ✅

    • Why? This allows us to notify you so you can see if someone has written to you without needing to open the app. Also, if you have a Band, you will be able to receive Band notifications.

With critical alerts enabled, you can receive SOS even if your phone is in Do Not Disturb or silent mode.

This permission will be requested the first time you accept being a Guardian.

  • BACKGROUND APP REFRESH: Enabled ✅

    • Why? So that the App can check for new updates and new content.

  • MOBILE DATA: On ✅

  • Why? So you can send SOS messages and audios.

On ANDROID, go to Settings > Apps and notifications > Ellu Chat > Permissions (the way to access to these permissions will will depend on your Android device):

  • CAMERA: Allow while using the App (recommended)

    • Why? So you can send a photo / video without us asking you at that precise moment.

  • CONTACTS: Allow ✅

    • Why? To help you communicate with your contacts, we will only show those who are already on ēllu, without accessing your entire contact list. We explain this permission in detail in this articule.

  • FOLDERS AND FILES PERMISSIONS: Allow access ✅

    • Why? So that we don't ask you for this permission every time you share a file.

  • LOCATION: Always allowed ✅ You can learn more in this article.

    • Why? So that if you have the App in the background your contacts can still see your location in the features of Circles, Location, Aware, and SOS.

  • MICROPHONE: Allow while using the App ✅

    • Why? So you can send SOS messages and audios.

  • GALLERY: Allow while using the App ✅

    • Why? It will prevent us from asking you for access every time you send/receive a photo/video.

  • BLUETOOTH: On ✅

    • Why? So if you have a Band you can connect it. You can activate your bluetooth from Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Bluetooth > On.

  • NOTIFICATIONS: Allow all notifications ✅

    • Why? This way we can inform you and you see who has texted you without the need of opening the App. You can configure it in Settings > Apps and Notifications > Ellu Chat > Notifications.

  • BATTERY: Unrestricted✅

    • Why? Some Android devices limit apps running in the background to save battery. If ēllu is optimized by the system, certain features such as location updates may be affected.

This same setting may also appear as Power Saving in the device’s quick access panel. Make sure it is disabled to avoid restrictions on the app’s functionality.

  • DISPLAY OVER OTHER APPS (OVERLAY): Allow

    • Why? So ēllu can display important alerts and screens (for example, SOS-related), even when you’re using another app or when the app is running in the background.

    • How to enable it:Settings > Apps & Notifications > Ellu Chat > Display over other apps.

💡 On some Android devices, this permission is not enabled automatically and may be found under Special app access or Advanced settings, depending on the manufacturer.
